Well Done Liz!

I hope I can be forgiven for expressing my pride in Liz's personal achievement in retaining one of the Ramsgate County Council seats against an appalling background both nationally and in Kent.

There is no doubt that the expenses scandal hurt us badly, also the distraction of holding the Euro election on the same day, meant that County Council issues were almost totally obscured in the minds of the electorate.

For Liz to succeed against this background is testament to the fantastic amount of work she put in to the benefit of Ramsgate residents over the past four years as a County Councillor. She succeeded where many really good hardworking Labour Councillors in other parts of Kent did not.
I would also like to acknowledge the importance of the election campaign we ran in Ramsgate, organised by Janet Ladyman and helped by the hard work of all our helpers. I feel for Alan Poole, who lost, through no fault of his own.

You are quite rightly proud of Liz who is now one of only two Labour County Councillors and its a great result for her.
Commiserations to Alan Poole who despite all his hard work was not successful.

Heartily agree, cruel on Alan who worked so hard too.

It is such a pity that the electorate are unable to differentiate between a national issue and the quality of some of their local candidates. Congratulations to Liz and commiserations to Alan Poole who has been an excellent KCC member for Thanet.

My congratulations to Liz too and commiserations to Alan, I am still coming to terms with the European results today, it looks like shaky times ahead for Labour.

With the expenses issue I am still not sure it was what threw the vote as the Conservatives who had behaved if anything worse didn’t suffer so badly, I am going with our towns becoming so much nastier to live in.

Hey Dave, well done yourself.

While happy for Liz and yourself David I cannot entirely support your commiserations to Mr Poole. His arrogant and dismissive attitude towards other candidates durignt eh campaign was uncalled for and unsportsmanlike. Maybe a slice of humble pie will be good for him.

Well done 14.09 you are quite right he is arrogant and obviously feels it is his right to be elected.A spell in the wilderness will do him the power of good. Yes well done Liz at least you are there to turn the lights off when the labour party sinks into oblivian.

I'm afraid the last two comments are for me totally reflective of the Tory Party's reputation as the truly "nasty" party.

Congratulations to those (of whichever Party) won, and commiserations to the lsoers. No-one need say more than that.

It is like the one-sided spin that is spewed out on Thanet Life day in, day out. According to the blogmeister there, only Labour MPs have been fiddling expenses. Of course fact and truth play little part in that blog's raison d'etre. Again, so symptomatic of Tory behaviour.

Thanks Ramsgate Resident (Gerry?)pity you haven't the balls to say it to my face..........

Just to set the record straight Ramsgate Resident is not a member of any political party , is not called Gerry, and does not possess any balls (anatomically speaking anyway)

Still hiding behind 'Ramsgate Resident'...............

Well I also congratulte Liz, along with all the other successful candidates. I have always regarded Liz as a 'Good' councillor, politics do not enter that definition

Alan Poole 'arrogant'? What nonsense. I was out on the campaign trail with Alan and can say with conviction that no-one who knows him would describe him in thoses terms. 'Committed' and 'caring' would be more appropriate adjectives.

'....also the distraction of holding the Euro election on the same day, meant that County Council issues were almost totally obscured in the minds of the electorate.'

Does that mean that you think that the electorate are stupid, or is it just a petulant comment because the minority of the electorate who voted mostly refused to vote for candidates of your choice?

Well some of the electorate clearly are stupid. I am not going to try and excuse people who voted BNP for instance, they are either stupid or evil or just massively misguided.

That said the issue of the European Election and it being hijacked to provide a national message doesnt show the electorate as stupid necesscarily.

It is perhaps perfectly valid to use the election as a protest vote regardless of the actual performance of their local elected members. It would however show a disregard for local issues but perhaps the wellbeing of Thanet is adequately served regardless of whom is elected in which case using the election to exert pressure in the national arena is very valid.
