According to Thanet Extra
Trevor Shonk has been chosen to be the UKIP (UK Independence Party) candidate for the next general election.
Mr Shonk, 59, lives in Ramsgate and works as a self-employed delivery driver. He says that his knowledge of the area and of the people will stand him in good stead for the election.Mr Shonk said: "I have lived in Ramsgate all my life and I think that we haven't got enough local people in politics in Thanet. I remember when it was quite different here. People would go shopping to Cliftonville as much as they would Canterbury. Everything was there. There was also plenty for families to do in Thanet compared to now."
Over the years many of the buildings have deteriorated and the towns have not been looked after. We have great buildings, like Albion House in Ramsgate that Thanet council has let fall into disrepair. Now they want to sell it, but it is not theirs to sell. It is the property of the people of Thanet."What people want is a community. Westwood Cross has become our town centre but it has had a devastating effect on Margate and Ramsgate.
Margate especially has been devastated by Westwood Cross. I campaigned against Westwood Cross being built as there was no need for it. The area where Westwood Cross is used to be trees. We don't have many trees left in Thanet and we need to protect the environment of the isle. The China Gateway is going to take more of the landscape of Thanet - we need open fields not humongous buildings."
Mr Shonk said that he sometimes misses out on local political meetings as he works until the evenings, but is none-the-less confident running against the Labour and Tory candidates.
He said: "I have no worry campaigning against Stephen Ladyman and Laura Sandys. We need a local voice for local issues. If you are local and your heart is in Thanet people will vote for you."

UKIP blew there only chance of getting anywhere when they stabbed Kilroy-Silk in the back.
They are nothing more than a right wing nationalist protest party now.
Ken Fox
Shonk, ?
Shonky more like.
Ken, You have no basis to discuss who stands for what party as do any incumbents who where first Red then Blue or any other way round for that matter?
Congratulations to Trevor Shonk on his candidacy. UKIP is trying to spread out with regards to policy, though looking at the official website (which is much improved), policy is still very much based upon Europe. Very pragmatic. He wont be elected and Im sure he realises that, but itll strip away some votes from Laura Sandys.
Mr Shonk is sure of the support of the Labour Group, after all, its the only chance they have of saving Dr Ladyman's seat. More seriously, he is a totally different character from Ukip's last candidate here. Have they given up on Thanet?
I just look forward to Laura S being our next MP
Ps,
With regard to people who change parties, I did, actually, win an election under the 'flag' of the conservative party
Do you plan to stay, Ken, or are you just waiting for a better offer from another Party?
Anonymous, No offer was made, I changed parties, because, a, I fell out with the leader(?) of the Labour Group, b, because I did not trust the group to deliver the best for thanet, and c, because , nationally, I could see Gordon Brown waiting in the wings.
That's really interesting Ken. What did you fall out over?
And while you are at it, what aspect of policy did you disagree with?
We need to leave the EU and trade with the BNP.
Its strange that my IP reader detects that Clive Hart has the same IP address as a number of the anonymous posts.
Why can't you just be up front young Clive?
Steve Fox
I dont know you Steve, but that last statement reveals both a lack of understanding of internet technology and a perculiar approach to the truth.
You certainly dont have access to the IP addresses of anonymous contributers to this site.
You risk your contributions being deleted.
But presumably David, you do and can deny the comment rather than attacking the contribution? I have no doubt Clive Hart sees what he does exactly as he describes, which is that the interests of the people of his ward are entirely in line with the wishes he has for himself and his own career.
His standing down from a shadow cabinet job at county is an interesting decision, a wonderful variant on the traditional spend more time with my family, he wants to spend more time with his voters. I suspect he jumped before he was pushed, as a shadow member he has made virtually no impact, asked few questions of any worth and made no notable speeches offering any real alternatives: in short has proved less than able to carry out a strategic role.
Its interesting that Steve Ladyman, no longer good enough to be a minister in a labour government, is apparantly good enough for the people of Thanet; and now Clive, unable to cope with a shadow cabinet role at county, is still good enough in labour eyes for Margate and Cliftonville. What an interesting electoral rallying cry - labour's best, second best; good enough for you....should prove to be an interesting electoral season to come!
Truth to tell, local labour is looking just like national labour - old, tired, and in need of decent ideas and capable people.
Chris Wells, you always "plead the fifth" when anyone presses you on goings-on within the Tory Party locally, yet when you sing like a canary when the discussion is about other parties. No wonder you are "getting on" amongst your own.
Should I take that as a compliment?
I always try to answer when I have information relating to the question at hand, or am legally able to do so.
Ask away
Chris
How many times have you attend that unelected rabble called the regional assembly?
None. I was appointed to attend during my time as a TDC Cabinet Member, and became a KCC Cabinet member prior to first meeting.
Ken, you may have won an election under the Tory flag but you didn't stand in your original ward but were selected ahead of another long-time Tory for a pretty safe seat.
Ken done the right thing to leave the Lobour party when he did.
That is a much better thing than staying in a party that has sold out on the vaules it once had.
And as far standing in a safe seat, good luck to him, the residents still decided to vote for him. They gave him a vote of confidence.
It appears that we have jealous people attacking Ken, who are too cowardly to use their names, and choose to be anonymous.
