Asset Disposal

The following are the list of Thanet Council owned assets in Ramsgate that the ruling group consider to be "surplus to requirement". (there's another list for Broadstairs and Margate)

*Albion House
Pegwell Bay Caravan Site (release of covenant)
*Albion Place Car Park
Land at Meeting Street
Land at Beech Grove
Land Westside of Fairfield Road
Land at Dumpton Park Drive
Garage at 3 Colemans Yard
*Closed Public Conveniences at Boundary Road
Land at Greenfield Road
Ex Motor Museum, Westcliff Hall

The ones marked with a * are my immediate concern, being in Eastcliff.
I'll add more as I learn more, but I would be glad of any thoughts about any of them.

It all just shows how greedy our council has become in the pursuit of raising revenue. It is killing our town centres off by putting up parking charges, so shoppers go to Westwood. But it is happy to spend thousands on art projects, one of which is the current Turner Contemporary exhibition in Margate, which certainly does do much to raise local interest in Art and visitors also! This Council is short sighted to sell off assets, and why sell carparks, these are needed for any sucessful town, and the lack of will only drive people away. And then it also applies for planning permission for new one in Broadstairs..I'm sure this council has alot of savings to make within, and also a high staff turnover indicates bad management.

Yes Kathy, we were promised just before the last local elections that the Global Regeneration Church's youth service would be relocating to Westcliff Hall. I guess the announcement served its purpose at the time, but the Tories never put any effort into helping it happen. They now seem to be party to moving this important Ramsgate facility "out of town". It will join many other Ramsgate initiatives; Summer Splash, Beer Festival, Jazz Festival, IOTA, Mobile Skate Board Park all "stolen" and moved elsewhere.

Yes Bob, that was the promise, I saw him point to it on TV!
See above, he will promise anything when in a spot. Delivery will be more difficult.
The Mayor and Charter Trustees use all the ground floor, if the sell off the rest, where will the Museum go?

Albion Place car park sale came up before. Local residents protested very vigourously, and once again as it was just before the local elections, the then Cabinet member, now Chair of Council, withdrew the threat with the promise that it wouldnt return.
We shall see if he honours his pledge.

"honoured" and "pledge" - this is the council we are talking about. There is not a promise made towards me that has been kept or even remembered yet. Not from the administrative branch nor the elected. Sorry but it's true.

I know that several organisations have been interested in the Motor Museum but have been priced out by the council or the conditions they apply.

The longer they leave it, the more work will have to be done, and they will be left with nothing, yet another memory.

What is the council's ideal outcome for these locations or is it simply a matter of the highest bidder?

I note that your blog of Tuesday, May 01, 2007 has the following comment about Westcliff Hall:

"2. The building is in poor structural condition probably requiring major works and as it is listed and in a Conservation area special care will need to be taken."

If it gets in too bad a condition, perhaps TDC could serve a repair notice on the owner. :-)

Shoouldn't you add the Royal Victoria Pavilion to the list now it is for sale?

Royal Victoria Pavilion.

It might be the leaseholders of the pavillion that are selling, rather than TDC. Their lease still has quite a while to run, so it might make more sense to sell the lease rather than trying to persaude TDC to take it back.

Just a thought ...

Having seen the stat of the pavilion I am surprised that TDC haven’t served a dereliction order on the owners.
